The Escapists 2 is a sandbox RPG game by Team17 and Mouldy Toof Studios in which you have to do various tasks like stealing and crating to break out of prison. The game provides a side range of locations, items, and characters. You can experience a single player campaign and a brainstorming multiplayer or even a local co-op. You can download The Escapists 2 for a wide range of platforms, such as PC, Mac, Linux, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
Graphics – 4.5/5
The Escapists 2 game has popular-our-days retro-style isometric 2D pixel-art graphics made on (surprise) the Unity graphical engine. It looks rather similar to Hotline Miami due to the play of colors and shades. It’s hard to say that the visuals are impressing but, in general, they are very good.
Gameplay – 4.5/5
The Escapists 2 gameplay is designed to mimic the real life in prison. Of course, it looks fun from above, but your character has to behave following strict jailhouse rules. Otherwise, the escape might be failed. Always stay calm, avoid making eye contact, and explore your current prison to find useful items for crafting. The more stuff you steal, the more suspicious wanders become. It means that you have to use and hide all stolen items as quickly and surely as you can.
Don’t forget about making friends. Some prisoners might be hostile while the others may like you and help you in exchange for something useful. In the multiplayer, you can unite with up to 3 of your real friends to prepare more inventive and madcap escapes. Be attentive and don’t be afraid to put forward wild ideas. Who knows, maybe one day you will escape sitting on the back of a dolphin, or by breaking the space prison power-wall on a large rescue capsule.
There are always two or more ways to get away, so you have to analyze and do experiments. Every level of The Escapists 2 full game provides new, more complicated challenges, so there is no place to boredom.
Controls – 5/5
The controls of The Escapists 2 depend on the platform you play. In computer versions, you have to use traditional WASD for walking and the mouse for navigation, performing actions, and fighting. You can also use PC-compatible gamepads. The console layout is similar to all platformers. The left stick is for walking, and the right is for navigation.
Replay Value – 4.5/5
At the moment of writing of this The Escapists 2 review, there were 10 prisons available. You are likely to escape them all in a week of evening sessions. However, it’s very exciting to retake missions to try alternative ways of escaping. Then you can enjoy 3 multiplayer modes and play with (or against) random people from the web or friends. In the co-op mode, you can play split-screen on a single device.
The Bottom Line
The Escapists 2 is an engrossing franchise that is advisable to all sandbox fans. It provides an authentic experience with unexpected twists and hilarious gags. The quantity of details in the game is astonishing, and the multiplayer features are really advanced, so at least 20 hours of thrilling gameplay are guaranteed.
