Terraria is a 2D survival RPG game by Re-Logic game studio. In this game, you have to play for a pixel character, mine resources, craft thousands of functional objects, build dwellings (or anything else), and survive attacks of different fierce creatures. You can download Terraria for your PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Android and iOS devices, and consoles of the previous generation.
Graphics – 5/5
This game is based on traditional pixel-art, so it looks like 2D games from the 90s but has better graphics and less large pixels. The whole terrain is destroyable and customizable due to the Microsoft XNA Framework engine.
Gameplay – 5/5
Back in 2011 gamers used to compare Terraria gameplay to Minecraft. They are nearly the same, but the first one is still on the top of survival games, while all adult gamers avoid the second. For some reason, Minecraft became a cheap entertainment for 9-year-old kids and YouTube creators who make money on these children.
At the very beginning, you have to create a unique character, choose the skin color, haircut, and an outfit. After that, you are thrown on the surface of a procedurally generated pixel-art world with a wooden pickaxe and a sword. The day/night cycle in Terraria game is rapid, so you have to start building at least an earthen dwelling. Otherwise, flying eyeballs and hordes of hungry dumb zombies will kill you.
As soon as you create a house, you can start exploring the world around. Unlike Minecraft, it’s more exciting to go somewhere deep down underground instead of walking on the surface. The underworld of Terraria survival game is penetrated by endless underground passages that lead to the core. You have to make sorties to mine iron and other durable materials along with items from scattered chests. Soon, you will no longer fear creatures of the night. That’s when the real fun of exploration begins.
Controls – 5/5
Fortunately, Terraria latest version has very intuitive and convenient controls, because early 2011 versions required you to have strong nerves to understand what is what. To walk, you have to use standard WASD keys and a mouse for all kinds of attacks and mining.
Replay Value – 5/5
It’s difficult to write this Terraria review because the game is extremely immersive and doesn’t let me get away from the screen. It’s fascinating how such a monotonous game may grasp the attention of an adult player. The same thing happened to me when I played Diablo II.
The Bottom Line
Terraria is an excellent survival game experience. They sold more than 3 million copies, and almost everyone who bought it is still playing and contributing to the Terraria gaming society. It means that this title is a must-have for all fans of the genre.
